On behalf of the Interchange team, I'm excited to announce the newest member of the Interchange family: Interchange Trust Company LLC — a Washington state-chartered trust company, with our charter effective July 16, 2026.
A trust charter isn't a product, and this isn't a product announcement. It's something more foundational. Interchange Trust Company is authorized to serve as a directed trustee and custodian of assets held in retirement accounts and employee benefit plans — and that authority unlocks the product line our correspondents have been asking about since day 1: tax-advantaged accounts.
Unified Custody
Americans hold $47.6 trillion in retirement assets — $18.2 trillion of it in IRAs alone. It's the largest pool of investable assets in the country. For most households, it’s the largest financial asset they’ll ever hold.
And every one of those accounts requires a trustee or custodian. That single legal requirement shapes the entire industry. Most platforms — including most "modern" ones — rent the capability from a third-party custodian: another vendor, another ledger, another nightly batch file, another reconciliation job. The same fragmentation we set out to eliminate in execution, clearing and custody, reproduced one layer up.
When we launched Equities, we noted that many well-known self-clearing firms stop short of offering complex tax-advantaged account types. Why? Self-clearing gets you to taxable brokerage accounts. Tax-advantaged accounts need a qualified trustee. Now we have one — and it runs on the same proprietary platform as everything else we've built.
Charter Powers
Interchange Trust Company will serve as directed trustee and custodian for tax-advantaged accounts on the Interchange platform, beginning with the account types your customers already know and ask for:
- Traditional & Roth IRAs
- Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)
- Trump Accounts — the new tax-advantaged account for children created by federal law, which took effect on July 4th of this year, including the one-time $1,000 federal seed contribution for eligible children born between 2025–2028
Beyond this initial scope of new accounts, we plan to continue rolling out all remaining account types afforded by our trust powers, delivered by correspondent demand — such as 529s, 401ks and so on.
One Platform
For example, a Roth IRA on the Interchange platform isn't a different system. It's the same real-time ledger, the same automated money market sweep from Treasury, the same whole-and-fractional-share equities engine — inside a tax-advantaged wrapper, with the trustee under the same roof, with execution, clearing and custody performed by Interchange Clearing.
One account structure. One set of balances. One system of record. No third-party trustee holding a shadow copy of your customers' retirement assets and sending you zip file of customer 1099s each year.
9 Months
From initial application to an approved trust charter, the team did it in 9 months — the same way we approach everything: do the hard regulatory work properly, and do it fast. Interchange Trust Company is the 23rd state-chartered trust company in Washington, and we're grateful to the Department of Financial Institutions' Division of Banks for a rigorous and responsive process.
"We welcome Interchange Trust Company LLC to the Washington Charter. DFI is committed to supporting local communities with new financial services companies while continuing to foster safe and sound financial services for all Washington residents through strong regulatory oversight."
Matt Harvey, Director, Division of Banks, Washington State DFI
For those keeping score at home: FINRA, DTC, NSCC, and Nasdaq memberships in our first eighteen months. A Washington State trust charter nine months later. One more foundational piece of the financial markets infrastructure stack, built in-house.
What's Next
If you're building for the future of investing—whether that's retirement accounts, IRAs and HSAs, or the next wave of Trump Account holders—we'd love to talk. Request access and start building with Interchange today.
